相传在春秋战国时期，越国将军范蠡辅佐越王重兴国业，功高天下，因越王勾践嫉妒贤能、疏远朝臣，在当时的情况下呢，范将军就弃官出走，西渡太湖来到宜兴，改名为陶朱公，开创了宜兴的制陶业，成为宜兴制陶第一人，他的情人西施四处寻访范将军的下落，一对情人终于相会在这洞天福地，这个优美动听的民间传说就是慕蠡洞的来历。
Yuqin Palace (Palace of Sleeping):Now we’ve come to the fifth palace, the “Yuqin Palace”. It was said that Fan Li and Xi Shi slept here after their retirement. At that time there was no water on this holy smooth stone bed. Have a touch on it and you will obtain a life-long happiness. Have a look and you will never feel lonely all your life. Please look this way and enjoy the splendid white jades, pearl curtains, flower windows in moonlight, silver candle and palace lanterns here. According to tales, Fan Li and Xi Shi often dated here. Let’s call it the Palace of Beauty! Though it is richly jeweled, it has no modern electric appliances. Being curious all his life, Fan Li had not forgotten reading even when taking refuge here. Originally connected to the Skylight with full sunlight, it was like a study, an ideal place for reading.
玉寝宫: 今のは五番目の宮、「玉寝宮」であります。范蠡と西施が隠居した時寝たところと伝えられます。当時この石には水が溜まっていなくて、非常に滑らかでした。手で触ると、一生しあわせになると言われます。この美しいところをみてください。伝説によると、范蠡と西施は常にここで会うから、「美女宮」と呼びましょうか。范蠡は一生好学で、ここで避難する時も、読書を忘れたことはありません。ここは元々天窓と接していて、よく光に照らされています。書斎みたいで、もっともいい読書のところです。
